Mary, the mother of Jesus, is a beautiful example to us of a good mother, but have you ever pondered the characteristics of the Holy Spirit, the third person of the Godhead?

On the sixth day of creation, God created man. Genesis 1:26 says, “Then God said, ‘Let Us make man in our image, according to our likeness.’” At that point man was created like God and had the character traits of both male and female, like God. Then God said that it wasn’t good for man to be alone and he would make a helper comparable to him. He then caused man to sleep deeply and then formed woman out of one of man’s ribs. Thus the first character trait of woman is to be a helper. This is the same as Holy Spirit as Jesus told his disciples in John 14 that he would send them a helper.

Holy Spirit is also known as comforter, counsellor, and keeper. When Jesus ascended to heaven, he told his disciples to wait because he would send them a comforter who would teach them.

John 14:26 says, “But the helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, He will teach you all things,” Holy Spirit is our helper. He is the one that Jesus sent to be always with us, helping us, teaching us, and guiding us through all things in life.

Another thing that the Bible teaches us is not to “grieve” the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is grieved when we make choices that make God sad. This is much the same way as it is with our mothers. Many times the words of our mothers play through in our minds keeping us from making poor choices. We don’t want to grieve or disappoint our mothers.

Our mothers are so much like the Holy Spirit. They are there for us, helping and teaching us. They pray for us and help us to keep our lives on the right track. They comfort us when we are sad or when we go through hard times. And when they are not with us, we have the Holy Spirit to continually provide for those needs that we have.

I pray the Lord’s blessing on all mothers this Mother’s Day. May you all know the Holy Spirit to a greater degree as he is with you always to help you in all things.
